Captio AI vs duna
Captio AI vs duna, the Spanish caption app for iPhone and Mac: Catalan and Basque captions, offline on the device, who is talking, translation and price.
Facts checked on each company's own pages. How we compare
The short answer
Choose duna if you read captions in Spanish, Catalan, Galician, Basque or English on an iPhone with iOS 26 or an Apple silicon Mac and want them free, steady on the screen and fully offline, with nothing leaving the device. Choose Captio AI if you need Android, an older iPhone, speech that switches between Catalan and Spanish in one stream, other languages or live translation, or captions that name the people talking and recordings that sync and turn into summaries.
Choose duna if
you read Catalan, Galician, Basque or Spanish, want captions that work in airplane mode with nothing sent anywhere, want them free on both iPhone and Mac, or need .srt subtitles for your own videos.
Choose Captio AI if
you use Android or an iPhone below iOS 26, need translation, languages beyond duna's five, or captions that follow a switch from Catalan to Spanish mid-sentence, want names on each speaker's lines (Recognize Voices on iPhone), or want recordings synced with summaries and to-dos.

| Group conversationsAt a table or in a meeting, voices come from every side. | Partly: One phone: speaker labels, names, directionOne phone captions the whole table and labels each speaker. On iPhone it can name people by their voice, and on iPhone 16 and later a wave shows which side a voice comes from. | Remembers people's voicesCaptions that say "Mum" instead of "Speaker 2", every time she talks. | Yes, Recognize Voices (iPhone)Save someone's voice once (about 20 seconds of talking, or an audio file) and their name and emoji show on every line they say, live and in saved recordings, instead of "Speaker 2". Voiceprints are made on the iPhone and never uploaded. When someone new talks for a while, Captio AI asks who it is. Free plan: your own voice plus one other person; Plus: more people. Source: Recognize voices (Captio AI) (Captio AI) | No, it makes no voiceprintThe privacy policy says duna does not identify who speaks, creates no voiceprint and keeps nothing from the analysis of voice changes. | Shows where a voice comes fromAt a busy table, knowing where to look helps you follow who is talking. | Yes, on iPhone 16 and laterWith the iPhone flat on the table, a wave grows at the edge of the captions on the side the voice comes from, in that speaker's colour, while new words appear. It uses the iPhone's spatial microphones (not AirPods or an external mic), works in Live Captions and Live Translator, is calculated on the phone, and is free. A doorbell, knocking, a smoke alarm, a siren, a phone ringing or a baby crying makes the phone vibrate, with a notification when the screen is locked during a recording. It works while Captio AI is recording, not as an always-on alarm. Recognized on the phone; free; not on Android yet. What actually sets them apart
Does duna work in Catalan?
Yes. duna captions Spanish, Catalan, English, Galician and Basque, one language per session, each downloaded once. Galician and Basque are marked New and make more mistakes. Captio AI captions Catalan, Galician and Basque too, among 60+ languages, and keeps one caption stream going when a speaker switches between Catalan and Spanish.

Does duna work in airplane mode?
Yes. Once a language is downloaded (120 to 195 MB), listening, transcribing and video subtitles all run on the device without internet, and nothing is sent anywhere. Captio AI needs a connection for Live Captions and processes speech in the cloud; offline it records and transcribes when you're back online.

Is duna on Android or older iPhones?
No. duna runs on an iPhone with iOS 26 or an Apple silicon Mac with macOS 26, and Google Play has no duna app. Captio AI has an Android version and also supports iPad and iPhones as old as iOS 15.1.

Does duna show who is speaking?
Not by name. duna opens a new paragraph when the voice changes, and its privacy policy says it neither identifies the speaker nor builds a voiceprint. Captio AI tags the voices as Speaker 1, Speaker 2, and on iPhone replaces the tag with a name for anyone whose voice you recorded once.

Can duna translate for tourists in Barcelona?
No translation is described: duna writes down the one language picked for the session. Captio AI's Live Translator sets a translation beside the original captions, and in two-way mode the visitor and you each read the other in your own language.

Where duna starts a fresh paragraph for a new voice without naming it, Captio AI can write the name: Recognize Voices on iPhone labels the lines of anyone you saved, live and in the recording, and with an iPhone 16 or newer lying flat, Speaker Direction grows a wave on the edge nearest the person talking.

It depends on where you are
A class taught in Catalan
duna captions Catalan on an iPhone, or on a Mac set up as a big screen in the room, with no internet once the language is downloaded. If the teacher switches between Catalan and Spanish, Captio AI keeps both in one caption stream; duna writes the one language chosen for the session.
Captions for this situationA train through the mountains with no signal
duna keeps captioning on the device in airplane mode. Captio AI only records there and writes the transcript later.
Subtitles for a video you filmed
duna writes .srt subtitles on the device, lets you fix them line by line and burns them into a copy of the video. Captio AI transcribes the file with speaker labels, but its exports (text, link, PDF, email) don't include a subtitle file.
A work meeting where it matters who said what
Captio AI puts a speaker tag, or a saved colleague's name on iPhone, on every line, so later you can tell who promised what. duna marks a new voice with a new paragraph.
Captions for this situationA visit to your CAP (health centre) you want to go over at home
Captio AI keeps the appointment with its audio, synced to your account, and AI Summary lists what the doctor asked you to do. duna keeps the text on the device it was made on.
Captions for this situationSpanish captions on an Android phone
duna needs an iPhone on iOS 26 or an Apple silicon Mac. Captio AI runs on Android and captions Spanish.

Frequently asked questions
Can I use duna on a Mac in a classroom in Barcelona?
Yes, if the Mac has Apple silicon and macOS 26: duna's Mac app is made as a big, calm screen for a room, a class or a meeting, and works offline once the language is downloaded. Captio AI is made for iPhone, iPad and Android; its App Store listing also lists Apple silicon Macs.
Does duna work in Basque or Galician?
Yes, both are among its five languages, marked New; duna says they are the most recent and make more mistakes than the other three. Captio AI captions Basque and Galician too, and follows a speaker who switches between either one and Spanish.
Does duna send my voice to a server?
No. Voice, text and videos stay on the iPhone or Mac, no audio is written to a file, and its App Store label reads "No se recopilan datos" (no data collected). Captio AI works the other way: speech goes to a cloud recognition service once you say yes, Captio AI doesn't store that audio on its own servers, and none of your content goes into training AI models.
Can duna make Spanish subtitles for my videos?
Yes. Pick a video or audio file, choose its language, and duna writes .srt subtitles on the device, then opens an editor and can export the video with the subtitles burnt in. Captio AI can transcribe the same file and mark who speaks when; you get it back as a transcript to read or share.
Can I use duna with AirPods or an external microphone?
Yes: the iPhone's own microphone, a wired one or Bluetooth headphones, and duna keeps listening when you switch; on the Mac you choose the microphone in its settings. Captio AI keeps captioning on AirPods or an external microphone too; only Speaker Direction, which reads the iPhone's own microphones, then stays hidden.
Do duna transcripts sync between my iPhone and Mac?
No: a session made on the Mac stays on the Mac, and one made on the iPhone stays there. Captio AI, once you sign in with Apple or Google, keeps recordings and their audio synced in your account.
Is duna available in Mexico?
Yes. The Mexican App Store lists it free too (November 2026), for iPhone and Mac. Captio AI is downloadable in Mexico and Spain alike, on iPhone or Android, and captions Spanish, with Plus priced per country.
